Epidemiology
- Sore throat
- Inflammation of the pharynx, and surrounding lymphoid tissue that my be viral or bacterial origin
- Virus appear to the cause of majority of episode
- B-hemolytic streptococci being the most prevalent microorganism.
Signs and symptoms
- Sore throat associated with dysphagia nd fever
- Hyperemia of pharynx and hypertrophied tonsil
- Gas: B-hemolytic Streptococcus
o Presence of a tonsillar exudates
o Swollen and tender cervical node
o Lack of cough
o History of fever greater than 38
Pharmacological therapy
- Penicillin
o Drug of choice
o 250 mg twice daily orally for 10 days
o injectable forms of penicillin (IM) increases the risk of allergic reaction and painful but favors compliance
- ampicillin and Amoxicillin offer no advantage over penicillin
- penicillin-allergic patient
o erythromycin estolate 20-40 mg/kg/d for 10 days
- macrolide
o azithromycin
o 2nd line of agent
